For nearly a decade the Pasadena Bioscience Collaborative (PBC) has offered scientists a low cost way to perform research. PBC is a not for profit early stage incubator that has proven to be a key factor for CEO‟s as they begin the complexities of starting a new company. Word has spread fast. In 2004 the PBC began with a single company, by 2013 that number had risen to 17 with a number of potential tenants waiting for grant approval.

Responding to the growing need for wet lab space PBC has opened a third facility. This has created space for 8 more companies. Strategically located within walking distance of each other, the three labs further strengthen Pasadena’s burgeoning reputation as a welcoming community for biotechnology, chemistry and life science research. Known in the industry as „wet labs‟, each of the facilities provides di-ionized water, chemical storage, dedicated work spaces and access to high end shared use laboratory equipment that the startups who rent space at PBC might not otherwise be able to afford.

In the words of PBC President Bruce Blomstrom “We strive to make the incubator much more than just a place to work. A wide range of advisory resources are available to tenants including scientific, technical, financial and business advisors. More than this, the incubator is often able to help tenants find prospective interns or employees.”

Utilizing long standing relationships with Pasadena City College and other LA area Universities, PBC has found work for a number of students within the ranks of incubator tenants. A recent beneficiary of this arrangement is Dr. Keyvan Benham of the Colorado based company Lanx, Incorporated. Specializing in the regeneration of musculoskeletal tissues for spinal repair, in 2012 Dr. Benham was introduced to a young intern who assisted him with vital research related to the development of an advanced bone regeneration scaffold.

“The product which I am developing has benefited tremendously from both the human and material resources that the PBC offers” Benham explains. “The fact that the PBC was able to introduce me to an intern who already had many of the skills that I needed was invaluable to the continuation and success of my project.”

With the addition of its third facility, the Pasadena Bioscience Collaborative continues to be at the forefront of innovative research in the Los Angeles area.
